Many people subscribe to lists just to get the "Free gift" for subscribing.
They aren't the least bit interested in your newsletter. Some unsubscribe
after downloading their freebie, and others just delete it without reading
it as it comes. That really isn't much different than the people who
expressed that vague interest, then never read the newsletter. Is it?

Right on!

In fact, I would argue that an "incentivised" subscriber is always worth LESS than a subscriber that was "sold" on the benefits of joining your email list.

Absolutely. But they are better than buying subscribers or
leads, even renting out lists (unless you can get the list
owner to endorse your mailing).

And gift giveaways are definitely a quick way to add large
numbers to your list. Paul Myers calls it 'The Tap' in his
lovely book called "Amazing List Building".

Last December, I acquired 1,700 subscribers in a gift giveaway.
Over 12 months, they have brought over $5000 in profits - and
I still have just over 500 still with me.

Recently, in a week, I added 3,500+ subscribers to my list in
a similar JV. Already 23 of them have ordered products ranging
in price from $19.95 to $395 - and I haven't even sent them
my first ezine issue!

It's all relative - and a lot depends on the process you have
in place to market to them, and how hard you are seen coming
on. If you are genuinely interested in HELPING them by offering
value, subscribers will respond the way you want them to -
no matter why they first joined your list!

Just my 2 bits worth.
