On the topic of building back links, here is a tip:

One way to get back links is to ASK FOR THEM.

Example:
http://EzineArticles.com/creatives/

Does it work? Google is currently reporting 3300 links back and Yahoo is 
reporting 20,900 links back to the above site. You can find this out by 
doing a link:your-company-name.com on Google or 
linkdomain:your-company-name.com in Yahoo.

Some in the SEO circles think that you should not name your links directory 
with a sub-directory called "links" and I agree with them... which is why I 
called mine: /creatives/ ...

Lastly, if you do end up buying links from a reputable text link seller, be 
sure to lock in at least 60-90 days of time with them and monitor whether 
or not Google is showing that the sites you paid for are actually showing 
your back links when you do the link: command to check your site. One note: 
Google is known to not pass 100% of the link: command results in order to 
prevent SEO nerds from manipulating the system.
