[epub] the end of Email-Based subscription?

EPUB thread-starter question for the week:

Have joe-jobs or spoof spam and email viruses completely negated the value 
of email-based subscriptions to your email newsletters?



The reason I ask: I was analyzing my subscription data from this past 
weekend and over a 24 hour period, I had 2,614 new list members in 
un-confirmed mode...of which I believe 98-99% of them are complete bogus. 
That means, email viruses and spoof spam are triggering false emails to be 
sent to my email list server and my server sent 2,614 confirmation emails 
in the last 24 hours.

All of my lists are 100% double opt-in or confirm opt-in (and if I didn't 
run double opt-in, I'd have 2600 new subscribers in the last 24 hours that 
didn't really ask to be on the list).

I'm shutting down email-based subscriptions to about half of our 
newsletters so that our list server stops falsely sending thousands of 
confirmation requests per day.

A month ago I had a newbie list member of Ezine-Tips scold me for using 
such big terms like "email-based" subscription methods. Geez, doesn't 
anyone use email-based subscription methods any more?...or is this method 
marked for death due to spam and email virus overload?
