[epub] Re: what's the policy?
"There are two sides to the issues of autoresponders and challenge/response systems. Both are solutions by a segment of your readership."

I can clearly see two sides to the challenge/response emails, and both make sense depending on how much value each subscriber. People spend a lot of money and/or time building and maintaining a subscriber list, each subscriber has a value attached to it and therefor it's worth it to spend a couple minutes clicking their verify links for most people. You only have to do it once per subscriber, then it is done.

On the issue of auto-responders there really is only one side that really makes sense, especially when you are talking about discussion lists. You never should send an auto-responder to a discussion list on purpose (accidents happen). At best, the mod gets an auto-responder for every single post that goes to the list, at worst (on open lists), everyone on the list gets your auto-responder. Most people are well aware of this too, normally around vacation time this is a huge problem on lists that I am on. This year I have only seen a couple.

Challenge/Response is a new issue and part of dealing with the spammy world we live in. The auto-responder issue is a blast from the past.
