That is a very interesting idea. Renewals would provide a pretty clear 
indication of readership and keep the distribution list clean and lean. 
 It's a bit of a pain for users but it also makes a lot of sense, since 
renewing subscriptions is a familiar concept for people.  The first 
time you did it you would probably see a pretty dramatic drop-off but 
overtime it would be something you could predict and long time readers 
would expect it.
