Yes, I also like the sound of  the proposed new guidelines, which should
make for more productive discussions.

Just a word about the participation issue. I'll repeat what I've said on a
few other lists when the same topic came up.

Sometimes, of course, I might just have too much on my plate to spare even
the few minutes to participate in a discussion. But often, the reason is
somewhat different.

It's quite simple. If I have a question to ask, or feel I have something to
contribute, I contribute. That's what I'm doing right now. If I feel I have
nothing new to add to the discussion, I don't contribute.

The so-called marketing "gurus" will tell me that regular posts to a
discussion list will enhance  my reputation  as an "expert." In my view,
posting when I have little of value to add does nothing to enhance my
reputation. If anything, it decreases it!

You could argue that I should be doing is turning on my creative juices to
provide contributions of value. True. But cooking up good stuff to post just
for the sake of maintaining a high visibility, can become a very artificial
process - even for a professional writer like myself (who's also not a
world-shattering expert on email publishing -:) ).

All, the same, no promises, but I'll try to take Chris' gentle rebuke to
heart!
