I always think it is better to err on the side of caution and reasonable behavior.

When I obtain the email address of a reader (I'm a published novelist so often will receive snail mail that includes it, for example). Then I might send them a quick email inviting them to sign up for whatever list I'm promoting--"I thought as someone who enjoys my writing you might be interested in..."

For customers, again I do not sign them up for a list automatically but usually at some point after the purchase I will send a quick email inviting them to join the list I think would benefit them the most (ie. advertisers to join ad club, etc.).
