Content Benefits of a Large-Circulation Ezine

The benefits of having an email publication with a large subscriber list are numerous. Today's tip looks specifically at how a large circulation can benefit the content of an email publication.

Large ezines usually have increased advertising inventory over their smaller counterparts, and can thus bring in more revenue through paid advertising, affiliate commissions, or product and service sales. This revenue can then be used to pay any contributing writers that the ezine uses, which in principal should increase the overall quality of the content. (Smaller, less well-funded ezines, on the other hand, are forced to get their content from the publisher or "volunteers.")

But ironically, large-circulation ezines often don't have to pay for content. And the reason is quite simple. They have something else which is quite often far more valuable to online writers than a small paycheck: exposure to a large audience of readers on a given topic. It's not unusual that writers in certain specialized topics own or operate a business in that industry. The free publicity could easily be perceived as more valuable than pay to these writers.

For example, if a publisher of an online marketing ezine approached me and asked if I would write an article for his 1000 ezine subscribers, chances are that I would expect to be paid for the work. On the other hand, if that same publisher had an audience of 100,000 loyal reader, I would be far more likely to jump (for free) at the opportunity to get my name and business in front of those eyeballs.

Of course, there are a hundred exceptions to this rule. Some writers will only write for pay, many publishers don't like to offer promotional bylines, and so on. But in general, the content benefits outlined above provide one more incentive to grow your ezine's subscription list as large as possible.
