Yesterday we looked at the email content alternative of digest-only discussion lists. If you missed that article, it's available here.
Another idea at the crossroads of ezines and email discussion lists is a promotional one. Ezine publishers often have great success in utilizing appropriate discussion lists to get the word out about their publications. Publishers simply include their ezine's subscription address or Web site information in the signature of every message they post to discussion lists.
The key to the effectiveness of this promotional method is to find relevant discussion lists on the same topic as your ezine. Here are some resources to help you find lists:
http://DiscussionLists.com/ - A searchable directory of 1000+ email discussion lists, also categorized by topic.
http://www.Liszt.com/ - Another searchable directory of discussion lists run by Topica.
http://www.eGroups.com/ and http://www.Topica.com/ are two popular free list hosting services with thousands of email discussion lists on every topic under the sun.
Some points to keep in mind when participating in email discussion lists:
Focus on providing information or asking relevant questions; don't post to a list simply to promote your ezine. A quality contribution is a better way to "advertise" your ezine than spamming a list with blatant self-promotion.
Relegate your self-promotional material to your signature, and keep your signature within the guidelines for each individual list.
Get used to the posting style of each list by reading recent posts before you contribute yourself.
Check out http://List-Etiquette.com/ for some additional email discussion list "netiquette" guidelines.
Used correctly, email discussion lists can not only be a good way to pick up extra subscribers, but you may also find that your participation will establish your expertise and attract a number of new paying customers to your business. I can think of no better medium for "networking" online than that of email discussion lists.
