Add the phrase "To be removed" to the list of action phrases that can trigger spam filters in the unsubscribe process.

In a previous Ezine-Tip, I said that the common phrase "To unsubscribe" will set off some spam filters because it is widely used in spam email, not just legitimate newsletters and commercial messages.

SpamKiller, a well-known spam-filtering program, filters on the phrase "To be removed," according to Meryl K. Evans.

"It's like The Borg," she remarked. "They keep adapting to whatever technology we use to fight them."

Want to help Ezine-Tips compile a list of common phrases or header settings that can trigger filter reactions? Send us any reports, whether it's your newsletter or Ezine-Tips that gets blocked or filtered, to the feedback link.

Here are a few more ways to reword list-removal instructions, as seen in actual newsletters:

  • "If you no longer wish to receive emails from us, please click on the link below:"

  • "If you'd rather not receive this newsletter in the future click here:" (although many filter programs block or flag 'click here')

  • "To remove yourself from our mailing list either reply to this message with the word "unsubscribe" in the subject or click here." (also uses "click here")
