Anti-virus software designer Sophos this week released its list of 10 most common email virus hoaxes for August.

Sophos noted that most of these will merely consume bandwidth but recommended deleting any unsolicited email attachments.

The list:

  • JDBGMGR (accounts for 14 percent of all reports): A hoax virus warning relating to the Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java.
  • Budweiser frogs (6.9 percent): Another hoax virus warning: "Someone is sending out a very desirable screen-saver of the Budweiser Frogs. But if you download it, you will lose everything..."
  • 'A virtual card for you' (6.2 percent): Another hoax virus warning: "It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title 'A Virtual Card for You...'"
  • Hotmail hoax (6.0 percent): Purports to be from the Hotmail staff: "All you have to do is forward this on to at least 10 registered Hotmail users" or you will have your Hotmail account closed down.
  • Nigerian money scam (5.9 percent).
  • Bill Gates shares fortune with Microsoft users (3.9 percent).
  • Frog in A Blender (Blender.exe) or Fish in a Bowl (fish.exe) (3.7 percent). Harmless cartoons but potential.
