Editors Note: This article was originally written in a time when email list server reports were very poor. While the advice below is no longer generally recommended -- it is always worth a test to find out more about the people who are joining your newsletter!

Today's Ezine-Tip apply's to everyone who has a list, where folks subscribe by sending an Email to one address, and ask to subscribe.

Do this: have your email list hosting provider add your email address to the JOIN- or SUBSCRIBE request alias. Then, setup an email filter (in your email client) to capture all of the incoming emails to a separate folder for daily, weekly or monthly review.

That means you will be seeing the exact same information your list server will be processing subscription requests.

So, by now, many of you are asking me, "Why would I want to waste my time doing this, when the list server already takes care of these requests automatically!" ...To which I say, "TRY IT," and then let me know in a month what you discover. You may be shocked as to how many personal requests are made to the automated subscription address of your list, including questions or potential customer price/product info requests.

Since I've been doing this, here are the kinds of return I have received for the extra time it takes to just glance at these each day:

  1. Advertising sponsorship requests for rates o cross sponsorship opportunities
  2. Seeing celebrities or media join my list by reading their SIG lines.
  3. I could create a postal mail address list from the folks who also included their SIG line in their subscription request.
  4. folks asking to get off my list, which would have gotten frustrated if I hadn't stepped in to help them in their own confusion.
  5. Requests for reprint rights or media inquiries & more!

My point is to NEVER assume that your list members understand that you are using a automated email list server to process their subscription requests, and put yourself on your join- or listname-request alias this month and find out what you've been missing. You can always go back to not knowing. :-)
