Mailblocks Launches Free Email Service

LAS VEGAS -- Mailblocks, Inc., today said it has launched a free, ad-supported version of its paid anti-spam email service and acquired the assets of the Web email service.

Although Mailblocks did not say what it paid for the company or reveal any other purchase terms, it did say it will move's about 50,000 free and premium users to its own service over the next three months. It also retained ValueClick (NASDAQ:VCLK) and Inc. to sell ad space on the free network.

The acquisition coincided with Mailblocks' launch today at the Consumer Electronics Show of a free version of its email service and beefed-up features for the paid version.

The free service will include 5 megabytes of storage, use of Mailblocks' patented challenge-response technology to deter spammers, use of rules and trackers to manage email and an ad in each email sent. Free users won't be able to consolidate other Web, POP3 and IMAP accounts into one Mailblocks account or access it from a desktop email application as paid-service users can.
